Taupo is located in the centre of New Zealand's largest forest plantation resource. The total area of planted production forest in the Central North Island is estimated to be 577,385 hectares, representing approximately 32% of New Zealand's planted production forests. The surrounding countryside is spectacular. Taupo is the hub of New Zealand's volcanic plateau, home to three majestic mountains: Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. The lake itself was formed by a huge eruption in 168 A.D., and there is still a great deal of geo-thermal activity in the region. Fishing, hunting and adventure opportunities abound.
