FORESTRY AND WOOD PROCESSING TAUPO, NEW ZEALAND

Taupo is located in the centre of New Zealand's largest forest plantation resource. The total area of planted production forest in the Central North Island is estimated to be 577,385 hectares, representing approximately 32% of New Zealand's planted production forests. Ninety percent of the region's production forests are radiata pine, with Douglas Fir making up approximately 5 percent of the area, the balance comprising numerous other softwoods and hardwoods. Trees are fast-growing - the average time to harvest is 27 years. And, they are intensively tended - 70% of the resource has been pruned to produce knot-free timber.

Ninety percent of the region's production forests are radiata pine, with Douglas Fir making up approximately 5 percent of the area, the balance comprising numerous other softwoods and hardwoods. • Three ports (Auckland, Tauranga, Napier) are easily accessible at a cost of between $10 and $18 per cube for freight, and the road links between the forests, Taupo and each of these ports are excellent. Having multiple ports to choose from gives you greater flexibility with shipping schedules and improves your ability to meet your customers' delivery requirements.

  • There's a large employment base with relevant skills, along with excellent regional training facilities.

  • Electricity and water are relatively inexpensive.

  • Waste disposal is not a problem and is inexpensive at $4-$5 per cube.

  • Good supporting infrastructure (engineering, trucking & distribution)

  • Pumice soil offers the least expensive development costs in the world.

  • The lifestyle is fantastic, with one of the world's best adventure playgrounds at your doorstep. Taupo is a favourite vacation destination for New Zealanders. The lake - one of the largest freshwater lakes in the southern hemisphere - offers pristine bays that are virtually deserted, an abundance of trout for those interested in boat or fly fishing, and a wide array of water sports and sightseeing opportunities. The surrounding countryside is spectacular. Taupo is the hub of New Zealand's volcanic plateau, home to three majestic mountains: Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. The lake itself was formed by a huge eruption in 168 A.D., and there is still a great deal of geo-thermal activity in the region. Fishing, hunting and adventure opportunities abound. And for those interested in sightseeing, Taupo is ideal to use as a base to explore the North Island because of its central location and its proximity to both tourist attractions and wilderness sites.
