ENERGY TAUPO NEW ZEALAND
If availability of energy is important to your company, the Taupo District should be on your short list.
13% of New Zealand's electricity is generated by the hydro dams on the Waikato River which are fed by Lake Taupo. The region also offers substantial geothermal resources, with more than 2000 MWe of as yet untapped geothermal potential. And, there is huge potential (estimated at 4000+ GWh) from woody biomass in the Central North Island, which is home to 32% of New Zealand's production forests.
Geothermal Energy
The supply of
naturally heated water within our district presents a number of opportunities
for geothermal energy generation, use of remnant heat (for timber drying, hot
houses, etc.) and extraction of elements from the residual fluid.

Hydroelectric Energy
Lake Taupo is the reservoir that feeds the hydro-electric system along the Waikato River. Dams along the Waikato generate electricity for the local area and for many other areas.

The Tongariro Power Development, centered in Turangi, involves the diversion of water from the central volcanic plateau for the generation of electricity and increased flows through Lake Taupo and the Waikato power stations.
Abundant local supply means that for the major commercial users, energy companies are able to supply electricity at favourable rates. The companies supplying the Taupo region are
TrustPower, King Country Energy Ltd., Genesis, Meridian, Energy Online and
Empower.
Natural Gas
Natural gas has been supplied to the Taupo township since 1987 by Natural Gas Corporation. Turangi, Mangakino, Acacia Bay, Kinloch and the other lakeside settlements are not yet connected to natural gas. More than 3,000 households in Taupo have a natural gas main in their street, making connection very easy. If households or businesses have a natural gas supply within 15
metres of their property they can connect for as little as $99.
