BUSINESS ADVANTAGES
For people in business, the key advantages to be found in Taupo, New Zealand are its central location and its lifestyle, which makes it relatively easy to attract people to work here. The district is situated in the heart of New Zealand's North Island, midway between the country's two biggest consumer markets of Auckland and Wellington. Road transport to and from the Taupo District is a strength relative to the rest of New Zealand, because of the district's centrality on State Highway One. It offers easy access to three ports (Auckland, Tauranga and Napier), a vibrant and growing business community with a strong service infrastructure that enables a variety of business opportunities, a lifestyle that employees and their families will relish, a strong retail centre including numerous restaurants and cafes, and a wide range of clubs and community services. The district offers
4 secondary schools, numerous primary schools, and a growing diversity of tertiary education providers.
Another advantage to some is the energy and energy by-products produced in the district. There are eleven main geothermal fields and approximately 450 surveyed bores in the district. Thirteen of these bores are considered to be large users, and six are very large. Currently, some of these geothermal resources are used by motels and hotels (for heating and hot pools), public hot pools, heating and drying, hydroponic growing, a prawn farm, and five geothermal (electricity) power stations. The supply of naturally heated water within our district presents a number of opportunities for geothermal energy generation, use of remnant heat (for timber drying, hot houses, etc.) and extraction of elements from the residual fluid.
In addition to existing energy supplies, the Taupo District lies in the heart of an as-yet untapped geothermal resource. It is estimated that at least 1200MW of geothermal electricity generation capacity exists within the district.
Preserving the natural environment-and especially the water quality of Lake Taupo-is a key concern for the district; so much so that the district's branding is "Lake Taupo. Think Fresh." New development in the district must therefore be cognizant of the community's focus in this regard.
